Quick verdict
DesignAfriend 18 Inch Dolls Horse & Riding Outfit makes most sense as an add-on for someone who already owns a compatible DesignAfriend 18-inch/46cm doll. The starting price is £40, which is higher than the median comparable dolls-and-playsets price of £20, so the value depends on whether the horse theme and included outfit pieces are exactly what the child wants. One key point to watch is that the doll is sold separately.

Product page evidence
The retailer listing identifies this as a DesignAfriend dolls and playsets item with age guidance of 3 years and over. Included pieces are a plastic horse, saddle, cloth, reins, hat, top, leggings and boots, and the listed dimensions are H49.5 W14.5 D49cm. The live product details were only partially available when checked, so it is worth confirming current price, stock, delivery or collection options and any live changes to the specification before buying.
Research takeaways
The biggest buying point is compatibility: this set is made for DesignAfriend 18-inch/46cm dolls, not the smaller 14-inch range. That means it is better compared with other 18-inch accessories or doll sets than with generic doll toys. The large 49.5 x 14.5 x 49cm footprint also suggests you should think about play space and storage, especially if this is going into a bedroom or playroom with limited room. Review coverage is thin, so the specification matters more than the rating details here.
Buyer trade-offs
This is a themed accessory set, not a full doll, so the trade-off is between a stronger horse-and-riding play scene and a narrower use case. At £40, it costs more than the tracked median of £20 across comparable dolls-and-playsets items, while DesignAfriend alternatives in the brand context start lower at £34. If the child already has a compatible 18-inch doll, that may be worthwhile; if not, a full doll set or a lower-priced accessory bundle may make more sense.
Price and value benchmark
The tracked starting price is £40, which puts this above the median comparable dolls-and-playsets price of £20. In the comparison set, 426 items start lower and 67 start higher, so this is not a budget pick even though it sits within the broader market. With just one tracked variant, value depends less on choice breadth and more on whether the exact horse-and-riding theme suits the child and the doll they already own.
Specs versus alternatives
Compared with other DesignAfriend options, this set stands out because it is an accessory-led horse scene rather than a full doll purchase. The DesignAfriend brand also has 14-inch and 18-inch ranges, so shoppers should stay within the 18-inch/46cm size if they want a proper fit. Nearby DesignAfriend alternatives such as the Big Sister 18" & Little Sister 14" Doll Set, Maia Mystical 18 Inch Doll Set and 18 Inch JoJo Roller Skater Doll start from £34, which gives you a lower-price reference point if the horse theme is not essential.
How to read the review evidence
The visible owner-review sample for the Argos listing is small, so it should be treated as a weak confidence signal rather than proof of long-term quality. One review misunderstanding about contents also shows why buyers should read the listing carefully and not assume the doll is part of the set. Because the DesignAfriend 18 Inch Dolls Horse & Riding Outfit page details were limited during checking, confirm stock, contents and the current rating on the retailer page before paying.
Who it suits
This should suit a gift buyer who knows the child already has a compatible DesignAfriend 18-inch doll and likes horse play. The 3+ age guidance makes it aimed at younger children, but the large size and accessory count mean adult supervision and some storage space will matter. If the child enjoys dressing dolls and building a themed stable-style scene, the horse, saddle and riding outfit pieces give the set a clear play focus.
Who should avoid it
Skip this if you want a full doll, because the doll is sold separately and that is the main point that could disappoint a gift recipient. It is also not the best fit if you are trying to stay well below £40, or if you do not already own an 18-inch DesignAfriend doll. Shoppers with very limited play space may also want a smaller accessory set or a different doll type with a smaller footprint.
Comfort and support
With dimensions of H49.5 W14.5 D49cm, this is a fairly large doll accessory set and will need room for play as well as storage. No electronic play features or batteries are listed, so this is more about physical accessories and dress-up play than lights or sound. The retailer context also notes adult supervision, which is worth keeping in mind if the set is being bought for a younger child or for shared family play.
Value check
At £40, the value case rests on compatibility and theme rather than on a low entry price. If the child already has the right 18-inch DesignAfriend doll and specifically wants a horse-and-riding scene, the set looks more convincing than a generic accessory buy; if not, the price can feel steep for what is effectively an add-on. Before gifting, check returns conditions, packaging and the latest stock status so you are not stuck with an unsuitable accessory-only purchase.

Questions about this toy
Is the doll included with DesignAfriend 18 Inch Dolls Horse & Riding Outfit?
No. The doll is sold separately, and the set is mainly the horse plus riding outfit pieces: horse, saddle, cloth, reins, hat, top, leggings and boots.
Who is this set best for?
It is best for a child who already has a compatible DesignAfriend 18-inch/46cm doll and enjoys horse-themed dress-up play. That compatibility matters more than the novelty of the set itself.
How much space does it need, and is £40 good value?
The listed size is H49.5 W14.5 D49cm, so it needs reasonable play and storage space. At £40, value depends on whether the horse theme and exact accessory mix are what the child wants.
Does it suit a 3-year-old, or is supervision needed?
Argos lists the set for ages 3 years and over, but the retailer context also notes adult supervision. That makes it better suited to a child in that age band who can use it with some oversight.
How does it compare with other 18-inch DesignAfriend options?
This one is an accessory-led horse scene, while other DesignAfriend options such as the Big Sister 18" & Little Sister 14" Doll Set, Maia Mystical 18 Inch Doll Set and 18 Inch JoJo Roller Skater Doll are full doll-style alternatives that start from £34.
